  • Symptoms of flu include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius) or chills, cough or sore throat. Additional symptoms of flu can include runny nose, body aches, headache, tiredness, diarrhea or vomiting.
  • Anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms should stay home and limit interaction with others, except to seek medical care, until 24 hours after symptoms, such as fever or signs of fever, have subsided without fever-reducing medicines.
  • Visit http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/guidance/exclusion.htm for more information on staying home while sick.
  • Persons at high risk for flu complications who become ill with flu-like illness should speak with their health care provider as soon as possible. Persons at higher risk for H1N1 flu complications include pregnant women and persons with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, heart disease or diabetes.
  • The College encourages all staff to consider getting the appropriate flu shot(s), when available, especially staff members who are at higher risk for flu complications.
  • If employees or immediate family members are sick, College employees and supervisors will follow the College Handbook, Sick Leave Policy, E-3i (3), E-3i(4), E-3i(5).
  • For the most up-to-date information on flu, visit www.flu.gov, call 1-800-CDC-INFO (232-4636) or visit www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/.
  • The College will continue to notify you of additional changes to SCC’s strategy to prevent the spread of flu at our campus locations.

It is very important that all staff and students continue to exercise basic hygiene principles as follows:

  • Sneeze or cough into your sleeve. Visit www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpPA73SZJYE
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after you cough, sneeze or blow your nose. Use of hand sanitizers is also recommended.
  • Avoid touching your nose, mouth and eyes. Germs spread this way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Routinely clean commonly touched surfaces such as doorknobs, elevator buttons, bathrooms, telephones, computer keyboards, remote controls, tables, desks, etc.
  • Do not use another persons’ telephone, desks, or other work tools and equipment. If you need to use another persons’ telephone, desks or other equipment, clean it first.
